Founded in 1946 by World War II veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America began as a small organization -- a group of committed individuals, who helped each other, shared their mutual challenges and worked on strategies for living with spinal cord injuries. Sixty years ago, our focus was to help paralyzed veterans at the bedside addressing their healthcare needs at the point-of-care. Then after being discharged from the hospital, our members encountered the difficulties of living life with a debilitating injury, such as inaccessible housing, transportation and simple, every day quality-of-life issues. Now, sixty years later our members continue to face new challenges, and Paralyzed Veterans is committed to be there every step of the way . . . growing with the needs of our members. Today, we represent more than 20,000 paralyzed vets who have served in virtually every major U.S. conflict -- past and present; 25 million veterans; 54 million people with disabilities; and an estimated 750,000 individuals with spinal cord injury or related disease such as multiple sclerosis or ALS. Whether employment services and training, accessible architecture, veterans benefits, advocacy, spinal cord injury research and education, or sports and rehabilitation programs, our continued success relies on the generosity of patriotic Americans nationwide. Paralyzed Veterans is not a government agency and all services for members are FREE thanks to the generosity of more than 18 million individual and corporate friends like you. Contributions to the Paralyzed Veterans are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
